Invite potential members to a Squadron cookout at the Post.  Provide some outdoor games for fun.  Invite them to join!

Co-sponsor with Junior Auxiliary an overnight lock-in for junior high school students at the local school gym or YMCA.  Invite them to join!

Invite potential members to a day long fishing trip ( Great Lakes deep fishing boat?)  Invite them to join!

Invite potential members along on a bus trip to a sporting event.  Invite them to join!

Generate potential member lists.  Gather together at the Post and provide refreshments while calls are made to the potential members on the list.    Invite them to join!

Come up with local gimmick to reward Squadron members who recruit new members or reinstate long-lost former members.  (e.g.  install a small blackboard in the Post Club Room and write in  the name of the most recent Squadron member to recruit a new/reinstated member …then provide a free drink or some other prize to that person for each day to their name is on the board at the end of each day. )

Sponsor golf outing for potential members (pay their green fees?)  Invite them to join!

Find out if any members of your Legion Post or Auxiliary Unit have sons/grandsons who are not yet Sons.   Invite them to join!

Set up and man an information booth at your local fair and/or community events.  Invite them to join!

Take a bus load of school kids on a trip to a museum or veterans' shrine.  Invite them to join!

Host Halloween party/haunted house for kids.  Invite them to join!

Sponsor a 50's/60's sock hop and invite the community.  Make sure you have membership information available for those who might be eligible to join.  Invite them to join!

Offer gun safety instruction for youngsters and others in your community.  Use NRA certified instructors.  Utilize the Eddie Eagle Gun Program.  Supply rifles, ammo and refreshments.  Invite them to join!

Make sure your local schools observe Veterans Day and Memorial Day program.  Help set them up.  Take part.  Provide membership information at these programs.  Invite them to join!

Seek out opportunities to speak at local service clubs about the Sons (Lions, Elks, Rotary, KP, etc.).  Invite them to join!

Sponsor bowling nights in your community.  Invite potential members.  Invite them to join!

Offer to conduct flag etiquette programs in local schools.  Provide information about the Sons.

Hold NASCAR parties and invite potential members (who receive free refreshments).  Invite them to join!

Organize a group of members who are willing to speak to school classes and at special events.

Help coordinate WWII vets who will speak to school classes and explain why sacrifice for freedom is still relevant today.

Offer reduced-dues to Legion members who are eligible and willing to take membership in the Sons.  Charge only enough dues to cover Detachment and National dues.  Invite them to join!

Set up Sons/Legion information booth at local grocery store or at public events.  Invite them to join!

Solicit new Sons at Legion baseball events.  Invite them to join!

Get a Post to charter an S.A.L. Squadron.

Sponsor a community music festival.  Provide membership information.  Invite them to join!

Pay Squadron membership dues for service member-Sons while they are on active duty.

Sponsor youth sport league teams.  Get to know the players.  Find out who is eligible.  Invite them to join!

Get together with other Squadrons and challenge each other to membership contests.  (e.g.  losers have to serve dinner to winners…or some other prize idea)

Host teen dances (under 18) for young S.A.L. and Junior Auxiliary members.  Encourage both groups to bring along potential members.  Invite them to join!

Provide “Why I Belong” pamphlets to school kids.

Buy pro-Legion/S.A.L. advertising time on local cable TV.

Place pro-Legion/S.A.L. ads in local newspapers.

Place S.A.L. information in local schools.

Place S.A.L. membership information throughout your community (barber shop, doctor's office, etc).

Sponsor activities at the local Boys' Club.

Sponsor activities at local social clubs.

Arrange for big-name celebrity to sign autographs at S.A.L. information booth.  Invite them to join!

Seek out and invite high-profile local officials (mayor, congressman, legislators, police/fire chief, ministers, etc) into membership.  Invite them to join!

Seek out and invite tradesmen, laborers, mechanics, bank employees, store clerks, insurance agents, real estate agents, etc. into membership.  Invite them to join!

Sponsor community-wide turkey shoot and provide membership information.

Set up temporary museum of WWI – WWII – Korea – Vietnam memorabilia (borrowed from Legionnaires).  Invite the community and invite them to join!

Obtain and use copy of The American Legion “2002 Membership Team” booklet.

Create multiple membership teams within your Squadron.  Encourage competition between them.

Look for new members among the ranks of the local college ROTC programs, campus veteran programs and campus fraternities.

Look for new members among the ranks of your local police department, fire department and paramedic squads.
